Deloris Jean Gay Jones, widower of Wallace "Jack" Jones, transitioned to her heavenly home Wednesday, May 22, 2019. She was a lifelong resident of Montgomery County, was 84 years old, born on March 13, 1935 to the late Earnie and Nannie (Darnell) Gay. She was the eldest of nine children. Deloris had the blessed privilege of being a stay at home mother to her six children, six grandchildren, and 5 of her eleven great-grandchildren, a task she enjoyed more than words can ever express. She had that special calling as a caretaker, which spread out in her neighborhood of Smithville, babysitting many family and friends' children. She loved cooking, was an avid flower grower-potting them on every inch of her front porch, baking and most of all, watching her soaps: Days of Our Lives, As The World Turns, then came Young and the Restless. After having many conversations about these with her, we as her children are convinces these people were her second family-never missing an episode of her favorites.
She was a longtime active member of Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Sterling, KY since her childhood, where she proudly claimed to be the "Pastor's Biggest Fan". There she loved attending church events: programs, dinners where she is known for her corn pudding, and the beautiful smile she carried on her face.
Deloris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three siblings: Nannie, Wilbur, and Earnie Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory six children: Darmita (Howard) Clemons of Mt. Sterling, Jacqueline (Danny) Hamblin of Louisville, Sherry Gay of Bowling Green, Nancy Jones, Lynette (Ronald) Owens, Steven (The Golden Child) Jones, all of Mt. Sterling, five siblings: Ruth "Doll Baby" Banks, Frank Gay, both of Dayton, OH, Audrey (Anthony) Norris, Clifton Jones, Marcella (Larry) Crockett, all of Lexington, six grandchildren, Dexter (#1) Clemons of Ft. Campbell, KY, Meaci (Jerry Jr.) Stevens, Tevis Blanton, Tonya Clemons, Morgan (Deshawn) Steele, all of Lexington, Wallace "Blake" Owens of Mt. Sterling, eleven great- grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. She leaves special moments with her furry great-grandbabies, Sasha "Pookie" Blanton, Storm Stevens and Beau Clemons. We would be remiss not to mention her childhood friend of many years, Mr. McKinley "Dick" Walker who continued to make her smile in her days of sickness.
Her funeral will be 1:00 Saturday, June 1 at Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Arthur Douthitt presiding, with burial in Lincoln View Cemetery. Visitation is 11-1:00 Saturday at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Herald & Stewart Home for Funerals.
