During his college career, as quarterback for the Pitt Panthers, he led the team to the Cotton Bowl, Gator Bowl, and Sugar Bowl. He was named the MVP of the 1956 Gator Bowl.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alessandro and Gertrude Salvaterra, two brothers, Daniel Salvaterra and Nazareno Salvaterra, and one sister Marie Salvaterra Miller.
