James “Butch” Henson, age 79, of Mt. Sterling, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2025, at Mt. Sterling St. Joseph hospital surrounded by family. James was born in Mt. Sterling to the late Charles and Mary Elizabeth Henson on April 11, 1945. Butch began his newspaper career at the Mt. Sterling Advocate, but retired from the Lexington-Herald Leader after 40 years. Butch proudly served in the Army Reserves from 1964-1970. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball and was an avid outdoorsman. Butch was of the Christian faith.
Butch is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Peggy Diane Henson (Thompson); 3 daughters Sharon Fredrick (Richard) of Mt Sterling, Susan Redmon (Tim) of Lexington and Krista Johnson (Dennis) of Mt. Sterling; 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, a sister in law, 1 nephew and 1 niece.
Besides his parents, Butch was preceded in death by his brother and granddaughter.
A Celebration of Life will be held April 18, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Herald & Stewart Home For Funerals Chapel.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the weekend nurses and staff at the Mt. Sterling St. Joseph Hospital for taking such compassionate care of them and Butch.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
