James Edward Carpenter, widower of Alice Fay Hatton Carpenter, of Roanoke, Virginia, formerly of Mt. Sterling, passed away Monday, May 4, 2015. He was a 72 year old native of Montgomery County, son of the late Winfred and Elsie Johnson and the late Floyd Carpenter, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, former manager in the Roanoke Hospital, and a member of the Christian faith. He is survived by 2 sisters, Geneva Shindeldecker of Ohio and Beverly (Paul) Mansfield of Mt. Sterling, 2 brothers, Phillip (Patricia) Johnson of Georgia and Jeffery (Tammy) Johnson of Salt Lick, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Betty Hudson and Phyllis Allen. His funeral will be 1:00 Friday at Herald & Stewart Home for Funerals, Pastor Jesse Rogers presiding, with burial in Machpelah Cemetery where the American Legion will have military rites. Visitation is 11-1:00 Friday.
